IELTS score for Canada PR

Canada has some of the most liveable cities in the world, with their welcoming multicultural communities and inviting weather across all four seasons. If you intend to study and then work in Canada, you might have considered the process of getting permanent residency there. To ensure that you can communicate with ease, you will need to provide proof of your language skills to gain a visa, be it English or French. To prove your English proficiency, you’d be required to take the IELTS General Training test, which is the preferred test for immigration to Canada.

Language Requirements for Canada PR – Express Entry

To be eligible for Express Entry, you must prove your English or French language ability:

• take an approved language test
• get the minimum results required by your program
• include the results when you complete your Express Entry profile

The language test evaluates these abilities:

• writing
• reading
• listening
• speaking

To measure your English or French levels, IRCC uses:

• Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) for English – Exam IELTS
• Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadien (NCLC) for French -Exam TEF

Minimum IELTS score for Federal Skilled Worker Program

If your First official language is English (which is for all Indian applicants), then minimum language requirement is of CLB 7, which is a minimum of 6.0 for each section of the IELTS.

Second official language (French for all Indian applicants): Minimum level of NCLC 5, which is minimum of 4.0 in reading and 5.0 in all other sections.

To determine eligibility for this program, English language points are calculated based on your IELTS Score. As stated above, minimum score of 6.0 is required in each section and that will give you a total of 16 points. However, if you score higher in IELTS, you will earn more points as shown in the table below:

Minimum IELTS score for Canadian Experience Class

The skills you need will depend on the group your job is classified in under the National Occupational Classification system (NOC).

• NOC 0 or A – CLB 7
• NOC B – CLB 5

English

• Speaking and listening – CLB 5
• Reading and writing – CLB 4

How long language test results are valid for

Your test results must be less than two years old when you submit your application for permanent residence.

If you’ve been invited to apply for permanent residence

Check that your language test results will still be valid when you plan to apply.

If you haven’t been invited to apply for permanent residence

You may want to make sure your results are valid for the rest of the time you’ll be in the pool. If your results will expire before you can apply, you should:

• be tested again or
• apply before your test results expire or
• decline the invitation and go back into the pool to be considered in the future

If you apply for permanent residence with language test results that have expired, IRCC will refuse your application.
