What is IELTS?

IELTS refers to the International English Language Testing System. What is the Minimum IELTS Score to Study in Canada?

A student visa for Canada requires the candidates to score at least 5.5 in each of the four sections of IELTS exam with an overall minimum score of 6.0 or above for undergraduate programs. Graduate courses, on the other hand, require a minimum score of 6.0 in each section and an overall IELTS score of 6.5 or above. This is true for most courses, universities and college, however, few courses or universities may have higher or lower requirement of IELTS score.

When applying through non-SDS category a student should have minimum of 5.5 in each of the four sections with an aggregate score of 6, for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses. Although this is the minimum eligibility requirement, it must be kept in mind that at 5.5 Bands it is very difficult to get the student visa. Application through SDS- stream – Indian students applying to universities and colleges in Canada can now expect faster visa processing through the Study Direct Stream (SDS) program launched by the Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada. Unlike the usual visa processing that may take up to 2-3 months, SDS allows students from India to avail their visa in 4-6 weeks. When a student who meets the eligibility criteria applies via SDS, most applications are processed within 20 calendar days. To be eligible for SDS, minimum score of 6 in IELTS with no band less than 6 is required in each skill (reading, writing, speaking and listening).
