2. Gaining Expertise & Becoming a Subject Matter Expert
When you pursue a PhD, you’re diving deep into a subject you’re passionate about. Think of it like exploring a vast ocean of knowledge, but instead of just skimming the surface, you’re going down to the very bottom, discovering all the hidden treasures along the way. This thorough understanding feels incredibly rewarding because you’re not just scratching the surface—you’re becoming a true expert.

3. Intellectual Freedom
Think of doing a PhD like having the ultimate academic freedom. You’re not tied down to a specific curriculum or boss telling you what to do. Instead, you’re the captain of your own ship, steering your research in the direction you’re most passionate about. This means you can explore topics that truly fascinate you, whether it’s delving into the mysteries of outer space or uncovering the secrets of ancient civilizations.
But it’s not just about choosing cool topics. With a PhD, you’re also free to think outside the box and come up with your own ideas. You can invent new ways of doing experiments, develop fresh theories, and challenge old beliefs. This kind of independence is super empowering because it means you’re not just following the crowd—you’re leading the way, blazing trails in your field that others will follow. So, doing a PhD isn’t just about studying hard—it’s about having the freedom to be a true academic trailblazer.
4. Contribution to Society

Whether it’s finding ways to protect the environment, improving healthcare, or making education more accessible, you’re exploring ways to solve big, real-world problems. By doing this research, you’re not only expanding what we know, but you’re also finding practical ways to make things better for everyone.
But it’s not just about coming up with ideas. As a PhD student, you’re also gaining the skills and know-how to turn those ideas into action. You’re learning how to work with others, how to communicate your findings, and how to make a real impact in the world. And once you’ve earned your PhD, you’re in a position to lead the charge for change. Whether you’re teaching others, working in a company, or advising policymakers, you’re using your expertise to shape a brighter future for us all. So, when you’re doing a PhD, you’re not just studying—you’re becoming a force for good in the world.
5. Advance the current state-of-the-art and produce new knowledge
Choosing to pursue a PhD means diving deep into your chosen field to make new discoveries and push the boundaries of what we know. As a PhD student, you’re on a mission to find answers to questions that haven’t been explored before. By doing this, you’re not just learning what’s already out there—you’re adding to it with fresh insights and ideas.
Your research during your PhD can lead to big breakthroughs that change the way we think and do things. Whether it’s inventing new technologies, improving how we understand the world, or finding better ways to solve problems, your work can have a real impact on society. And these discoveries aren’t just for academics—they can be used to make people’s lives better in all sorts of ways, from medicine to everyday technology. So, when you’re doing a PhD, you’re not just studying—you’re on a mission to make the world a better, smarter place.
6. A personal motivation to become a professor
Deciding to pursue a PhD because you want to become a professor is often driven by a strong personal desire to teach, guide students, and contribute to the academic world. Many people are passionate about sharing what they know, inspiring others, and helping students discover new things.

Along the way, you face all sorts of challenges, but you also have moments of triumph that make you stronger and more confident. By pushing yourself and overcoming obstacles, you come out the other side feeling really proud of what you’ve achieved.

For example, you’ll learn how to think critically and solve problems creatively, which are handy skills no matter what you do. Plus, you’ll get really good at communicating your ideas, whether it’s writing papers or giving presentations, which is super useful in any job.
Another cool thing about doing a PhD is that you’ll work with lots of different people from all over the place. So, doing a PhD isn’t just about studying—it’s about gaining a whole bunch of awesome skills that can help you succeed in whatever you do.
11. Should I do a PhD?
It’s a big decision, and there’s a lot to consider. First, ask yourself why you want to do it. Are you super passionate about a specific topic and eager to dive deep into research? Do you dream of becoming a professor and sharing your knowledge with others? If so, a PhD might be a great fit for you!
But there are other things to think about too. Doing a PhD takes a lot of time – we’re talking years of hard work. You’ll spend countless hours researching, writing, and maybe even teaching. So, if you’re not ready for that kind of commitment, it might be worth waiting.
Also, think about your career goals. While a PhD can open doors in certain fields, it’s not always necessary. Some jobs value hands-on experience or specific training more than a fancy degree. So, if you’re set on a career path that doesn’t need a PhD, you might decide to skip it and focus on gaining the skills you need in other ways.
And don’t forget about your personal life. Doing a PhD can be intense, and it can take a toll on your work-life balance. Between the long hours of studying and researching, it can be hard to find time for family, friends, and hobbies. So, if you’re looking for a more relaxed lifestyle, you might want to think twice about doing a PhD.
Ultimately, the decision to do a PhD is a personal one. It’s important to weigh the pros and cons and think about what’s best for you and your future. So, take your time, do your research, and make the decision that feels right for you!
