Student Visa for PhD in Belgium
For international students from non-EU/EEA countries, a long-stay Type-D visa is necessary, which should be obtained from a Belgian embassy or consulate in their home country before traveling to Belgium. Visa applications typically require documents such as proof of university enrollment, Master’s degree certificate/transcript, financial support evidence, medical certificate, police clearance, and a €201 administrative fee.
It is advisable to initiate the visa application process well in advance before relocating to Belgium. Universities’ international offices and the Belgian embassy can provide guidance and assistance throughout the application process.
Can I work in Belgium after my PhD?
EU, EEA and Swiss students do not require a permit to work in Belgium after your PhD. A valid passport or ID card and an updated residence registration is sufficient.
Other international students will need a valid work permit – this is granted by the Regional Department of Economic Migration, and applications should be made in person or by telephone. Applications are free and required a completed application form, information sheet and a valid residence permit. the work permit is valid for a fixed amount of time and may need to be renewed later.
You may also be able to apply for a European Blue Card and receive full EU employment and residence rights for a specified period of time. Your university will also provide employment services to assist with your job search and any employment procedures.
Bringing Your Family to Belgium
PhD students in Belgium can bring their dependents (spouse and children) along with them. However, there are certain restrictions, limitations, and permits to consider.
Dependents of non-EU/EEA/Swiss PhD students will need to apply for a residence permit to stay in Belgium. This can be done at the local town hall (gemeente in Flanders or commune in Wallonia) within eight days of arrival. Dependents of non-EU/EEA/Swiss students will need to provide proof of financial support to cover their living expenses in Belgium. All dependents, regardless of nationality, will need to have valid health insurance coverage in Belgium. Dependents of non-EU/EEA/Swiss students will generally need to apply for a work permit if they wish to work in Belgium. The length of stay for dependents will typically be linked to the duration of the PhD student’s residence permit or visa.
