Visa Requirements

Following documents will be required for the study Visa for Australia:

  • Valid passport – Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your period of stay in Australia
  • Completed Student Visa Application Form
  • Application fee payment receipt
  • Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCOE) certificate i.e. an offer of place from an Australian institute/university. The forms are usually issued after the tuition fees have been received
  • Acceptance letter from the host university which will include proposed study plan
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) – Overseas health insurance receipt
  • Health and Character certificates (by empanelled doctor), to prove that your intention of staying in New Zealand is genuine
  • Two-four passport sized photographs
  • Transcripts, and certificates of your education 
  • English Language Test Scores IELTS/ TOEFL
  • Your intention to depart Australia upon completion of the study Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE). This means that you should be able to convince that you only intend to travel to Australia for studies and would return to your home country at the end of the course or after a few years of experience. Your circumstances in your home country which includes your economic circumstances; Potential circumstances/opportunities for you in Australia; Value of your chosen course to your future; Your immigration history; Any other relevant matters
  • Financial statements to prove you have funds for remaining tuition fee and living expenses
  • Good character – you do not have any criminal case against you/never deported; declaration form is usually enough

How long you can stay?

Study visa for Australia is a temporary visa to study up to 5 years. The type of course and its length will determine the length of stay. The length of stay is based on the course you intend to study.The ‘expiry date’ of your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and any welfare arrangements (where relevant) will also be taken into account.

Postgraduate Research

The length of stay for Postgraduate Research students is generally 6 months longer than the usual relevant period set out in the table below. This additional time allows these students to remain in Australia during the interactive marking of their thesis. For example, Postgraduate Research students who are undertaking a course of more than 10 months duration finishing in November-December, we will generally grant a visa that ceases 15 September (an additional 6 months from 15 March) of the year following course completion.

Course duration 10 months or longer (finishing in November or December) – Visa stay period till 15 March of the next year

Course duration 10 months or longer (finishing in October) – Visa stay period 2 months after course ends

Course duration of less than 10 months – Visa stay period 1 month after course ends

Post-Study Work Visa
Post study work stream (subclass 485) This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with a degree from an Australian institution. It lets you live, work and study in Australia, temporarily.

  • Usually between 2 and 4 years, depending on your qualification

Stay duration is as follows:

  • bachelor degree (including honours): 2 years
  • masters by coursework: 2 years
  • masters by research: 3 years
  • doctoral degree: 4 years

Eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • be under 50 years of age
  • hold an eligible visa and meet the English proficiency requirement
  • have a recent degree in a CRICOS-registered course
  • The student must have graduated or have obtained master or doctorate from an Australian education institution not more than 6 months back.
  • Should have done academic study of at least 2 years in Australia for bachelor’s degree or higher. You may get a single or multiple degrees in this 2 years’ duration, however, that is impertinent.
  • The course of study should not have been completed in less than 16 months.
  • show evidence that in the last 3 years, you achieved- Overall score of at least 6 with a minimum score of 5 for each of the 4 parts
Graduate Work Stream
Graduate work stream (subclass 485) This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with skills and qualifications that are relevant to specific occupations in Australia needs. It lets you live, study and work in Australia temporarily. Work permit after study in Australia is granted for those who have lesser than graduation degree too.

Eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • hold an eligible visa and meet the English proficiency requirement
  • have a recent degree in a CRICOS-registered course
  • have degree, diploma or trade qualification
  • Your obtained qualification should be in high demand list provided by SOL (Skilled Occupation List)
  • You must pass Skills Assessment in an occupation listed on SOL.
  • The qualification obtained must be related to the skills nominated from SOL.
  • Should have done academic study of at least 2 years in Australia. 
  • The course of study should not have been completed in less than 16 months.
  • show evidence that in the last 3 years, you achieved- Overall score of at least 6 with a minimum score of 5 for each of the 4 parts
Visa for Spouse
You can include family members when you lodge your visa application. For student visas, your family member is:

  • your partner, or
  • you or your partner’s dependent child who is unmarried and has not turned 18 years of age.

You must declare your family members in your student visa application even if they do not plan to travel with you to Australia. If you do not do this, your family members will not be eligible for a student visa to join you in Australia. Your family members can also apply as a subsequent entrant (at a later time, separate from your application). Family members who apply for the visa must meet our requirements for health and character.

Family members of students studying a Masters by coursework or research, or doctorate (PhD) can work unlimited hours once the primary student visa holder has started their course. Family members of students enrolled in below masters program can work part time 20 hour/week.
