What is Permanent Residency

Permanent Resident or Australia PR refers to a person, who does not have the country’s citizenship, but has been provided with the permission to reside, and/or do a job or business or invest inside the nation’s territories, without any restrictions at all on time- period put on his stay in Canada.

How to get PR for Australia
People can become a permanent resident of Australia in different ways. Three common ways of becoming a permanent resident are through gaining:

Family-stream permanent residence visas
For:

  • partners, children, parents or dependent relatives of an Australian citizen, permanent resident of Australia or eligible New Zealand citizen
  • children being adopted or in the process of being adopted outside of Australia
  • carers who need to move to Australia to provide long-term care for an approved relative

Work-stream permanent residence visas These are for workers who have an Australian employer sponsoring them to work in Australia or have skills that Australia values.

Business or investment stream permanent residence visa
For business and investment purposes.

Skill Nominated Scheme (AUD3,755, 8-10 months processing time)
With this visa, you can work and study anywhere in Australia, sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence, if eligible, become an Australian citizen. You must:

  • have an occupation on the relevant skilled list
  • have a suitable skills assessment for the occupation
  • be invited to apply for this visa
  • satisfy the points test
  • Able to score 65 points or more
  • Under 45 years old

You can be in or outside Australia when you apply for the visa and when we decide your application but not in immigration clearance. If you apply in Australia, you must hold a substantive visa or a Subclass 010 Bridging A visa, a Subclass 020 Bridging B visa or a Subclass 030 Bridging C visa, otherwise your application will not be valid.

You must have been nominated for this visa by an Australian state or territory government agency. Submit a completed expression of interest (EOI) in SkillSelect. State and territory government agencies can see your completed EOI and might nominate you for the visa. If you are nominated for the visa, we will invite you to apply. All state and territory government agencies have their own criteria for deciding who they will nominate. Contact the state or territory agency directly to find out more about their nomination process and what they want from you.

Other Paths to PR for Australia
To get Australian PR, Indian citizens should first work in Australia on temporary visa like Temporary Skill Shortage Visa which allows you to work and live in Australia for up to 4 years. Eligible dependents are allowed to accompany you and they are allowed to work and study. Once you are in Australia you can apply for following Permanent Resident Visas:

  1. Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (must be nominated by Australian employer)
  2. Employer Nomination Scheme
  3. Skilled Nominated Scheme 

REGIONAL SPONSORED MIGRATION SCHEME

  • Temporary Resident Transition Scheme– This visa lets skilled workers, who are nominated by their employer in regional Australia, live and work in Australia permanently. You must hold a 457, TSS or related bridging visa A, B or C. Usually, you must have worked for your employer full-time for at least three years. You must be nominated by your employer
  • Direct Entry Scheme– This visa lets skilled workers, who are nominated by an employer, live and work in Australia permanently. Apply for this stream if you don’t meet the criteria for the Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream. For this visa, you must be nominated by an Australian employer, you will work for your nominating employer in regional Australia, your occupation must be on the relevant list of eligible skilled occupations, you must have at least Competent English.

EMPLOYER NOMINATION SCHEME

  • Direct Entry Scheme– This visa allows skilled workers, who are nominated by an employer, live and work in Australia permanently. You must be nominated by an Australian employer, your occupation must be on the relevant list of eligible skilled occupations, you must have at least Competent English.
  • Labour Agreement Scheme – This visa lets skilled workers who are nominated by their employer live and work in Australia permanently. The Labour Agreement stream might be for you if you currently work, or will work, for an employer who is party to a labour agreement.
  • Temporary Resident Transition Scheme– This visa lets skilled workers, who are nominated by their employer, live and work in Australia permanently. You must hold a 457, TSS or related bridging visa A, B or C, usually, you must have worked for your employer full-time for at least three years, you must be nominated by your employer.
