How to Find a PhD in France

In France, there are three main pathways to obtain a PhD:

  • The “Classic” Pathway: This involves enrolling in a doctoral program at a university and conducting research under the supervision of a professor.
  • Industrial PhD: This pathway involves collaborations between universities and industrial partners, providing opportunities to conduct research with a practical focus and potential job prospects.
  • CIFRE (Industrial Agreements for Training through Research): This program offers research funding to students working on research projects in collaboration with a company.

Whichever option you choose, if you want to do your PhD in Natural & Technological Sciences, then you must find professors or researchers who have open positions for PhD students in their lab. Please do not write research proposals or email proposals to faculty in France. You should apply to open PhD positions only.

If you wish to do PhD in Social Sciences or humanities and you can’t find anything suitable, you will have to prepare a research proposal and contact potential researchers. Do not email every researcher in the field that interests you. For example, if your research project is in economics, don’t send your proposal to every economist! You must target specific people meaning the theme of your research project must correspond to the specialty of the researcher. For example. don’t send a proposal on a study of the history of Franco-Spanish relations to a historian specialising in the Far East! After you’ve sent the proposal to the right person, you’ll have to engage with the researcher in order to refine your thesis topic. To maximise your chances, you need to be flexible and ready to move away from your initial proposal.

Duration and Cost of PhD in France

A typical PhD in France usually lasts for three years. However, the duration may vary depending on the field of study, research topic, and individual situation. Extensions may be granted in certain cases, such as collaborative projects or part-time enrollment.

Cost of PhD in France is much lower as compared to that in the USA or UK as most universities charge a nominal tuition fees of EUR 280 per year. It is the living expenses of about EUR 12,000 per year which is the main component of expenses incurred for doing a PhD in France. But, PhD studies in France are generally funded, either through scholarships, research grants, or teaching assistantships. As an international student, you may be eligible for scholarships offered by the French government, universities, or external organizations. These scholarships typically cover tuition fees and provide a monthly stipend for living expenses.

Funding your PhD in France

Funding for tuition is not the question (as it is only about €380/year) but rather for living expenses which amount to approximately €1,000/month or higher (depending on the city).

If your national government or university have a specific programme for financing your Doctorate in France, then you should explore this option. Such programmes exist in particular in Mexico (Conacyt grants), Algeria (the ProFas B+ programme), China and Pakistan (HEC Program). If this is not the case, then don’t worry! A large number of Doctorates are funded by French host universities, in the form of a doctoral fellowship, which is a work contract that lasts 3 years or takes the form of other work contracts. There are three types:

Funding from a doctoral fellowship: your doctoral school provides you with 1,400 euros net funding for your Doctorate per month for three years. This is done either through its research budget or as a complement to your own funding. The doctoral fellowship is a work contract specifically for doctoral students, with no age or nationality conditions. It can be renewed twice for one year each time, for a total of 5 years.

Funding from a contract with a research institute: your research institute (CNES, CNRS, CEA, etc.) provides you with 1,500 euros net funding for your Doctorate per month.

Funding from a contract connected to a project financed by the Agence Nationale de Recherche ANR National Research Agency), at 1400-1500 euros net per month.

Pro Tip
While looking for jobs in France, Keep an eye on sites with job opportunities and create email alerts by saving your search criteria. Pôle Emploi (Employment Centre) lists job ads from all of the sites. The APEC (the Association Pour l’Emploi des Cadres the Management Employment Association) site also has some, so make sure you check them regularly. Take the time to update your CV and adapt it to the job offer you are applying for. Be sure to send in spontaneous applications to companies that interest you, so they get to know you. Be careful with your ereputation and the information about you that everyone can access. Recruiters are more and more frequently using the social networks to form an idea about the applicants they’re thinking of calling in. Go to job fairs to meet recruiters. CV and cover letter in hand, you will have several interviews in one day. As you won’t have much time to win them over, make sure you are well prepared. Use Your End-Of-Studies Internship Well. The end-of-studies internship is often mandatory. It lets you develop some understanding of the work world and apply the theory and skills you learnt during your years of studying. If your programme does not require an internship, nothing is stopping you from doing one anyway: it is a good way to pad out your CV and develop a professional network that you can later mobilise.

Bring your Family while you do you PhD in France

France provides provisions for family reunification. Spouses and dependent children of international PhD students are eligible to apply for a “vie privee et familiale” residence permit, allowing them to join the student in France. The requirements and procedures for family visas should be carefully followed, including providing necessary documentation and proof of financial support. Note that dependents are not allowed to work in France and have to show proof of funds to support their stay in the country.

Language Requirements to Study in France

While most doctoral programs in France are offered in English, it is beneficial to have a basic understanding of the French language for day-to-day interactions and cultural integration. However, language requirements may vary depending on the program and institution, so it is essential to check the specific requirements of the chosen PhD program. In most cases, the research work is carried out and published in English, so no need to worry if you don’t know French. Universities and Research Institutions also provide French classes to new students to facilitate their easy integration in the community.
